Population Growth = Central Saanich

In the 1991, 1996 and 2001 Census, Central Saanich’s proportion of the total population of 5-9 year olds remained relatively stable at around 6%. In fact, the actual number of children in this age category increased from around 900 to approximately 950. Current population estimates (this is a census year so we will know what the actual number is sometime in 2007) put the total at around 1,000.

Sidney and North Saanich through this same period saw a dramatic drop in the proportion of 5-9 year olds: from just over 6% for North Saanich and 5% for Sidney to around 4.75% for each in 2001. During this period, the actual number of children declined from a high of around 1,200 to just fewer than 1,000.

Central Saanich remains attractive to young families and is relatively affordable. Central Saanich is also growing and has growth potential primarily in Saanichton, Brentwood and Keating (it’s still no Langford mind you!). North Saanich has no areas designated for increased density or development.
