Travel

In 2001, the CRD conducted a travel origin-destination survey which describes the travel behaviour of the people that live in the Capital Region (the study is slated to repeat in 2006). For Central Saanich, roughly 72% of all trips – whether car, walking, biking or other modes – were either within Central Saanich or south to Saanich or Victoria. In North Saanich, the number is similar – about 68% - with a slightly higher number of trips to Sidney.

The figures indicate the tendency for citizen’s lives on the Peninsula to be oriented either within their community or south. For those that are working parents in Central Saanich, the location of the new school is in the opposite direction of the way they normally travel. The incremental cost, both in time and money, will be borne by Central Saanich parents. North Saanich parents will see no change as the new school is very near McTavish Elementary (the existing school).
