Burnside Community School
The past trend in North America has been to close community schools and consolidate student populations in larger schools that are usually located further from where people live (bigger schools - larger catchment areas). Planners and community leaders are starting to question this approach as it is seen as a significant contributor to urban sprawl (more on this and the supporting research to come). School Boards seem slow to change however as they continue to use consolidation as a way to reduce costs rather than looking to new revenue streams to maintain existing community schools (more on this to come as well). We are not alone. Here is a call to action from our fellow parents at Burnside Community School, an area I used to live:
"As many of you may well know there is a huge possibility that the Burnside Community School may face closure in the near future. With the growth of housing projects and development around this community and the surrounding neighborhoods, Burnside has had an influx of people come into the area, which will only continue to grow. The Burnside Community School plays a key role in attracting and keeping families in the neighborhood.
This is where we, as progressive youth, have an opportunity to get out in the community and help make a positive difference. On Saturday, February 18th, a group of concerned parents will join with concerned youth to canvass the Burnside community with hopes of generating enough support for the Burnside Community School. We will be surveying the neighborhoods and distributing a petition to present to the Victoria School Board. We will be meeting at 11:30 am for a quick briefing at the Burnside Gorge Community Association School Portable in the back of the Burnside Community School, 3130 Jutland Road. We will be canvassing the community from 12 pm to 4 (or 5) pm. Afterwards volunteers will be treated to pizza and pop, and the gratitude of many concerned parents&..
The school plays a significant role in our community as a whole and the students who attend this school receive a great education because of the unique one-on-one attention from teachers.
Please help us keep the Burnside Community School open!"
